Amazon.com Despite a wave of criticism asserting that Kings of Leon's fourth full-length is "too commercial," Only by the Night may be the closest thing to a pitch-perfect album to drop in 2008. Granted, Tennessee's band of brothers (and one first cousin) takes a turn for the heavily polished here, but what the album lacks in rough-edged raunch, it more than makes up for in earnestness and--yes--stunning beauty. From the opening notes of "Closer" to the listing balladry of "Cold Desert," Only by the Night hardly misses a beat. Highlights abound, particularly in the trading off of melodic lines between instruments, and in this regard, bassist Jared Followill is the album's quiet MVP. Above these gorgeous instrumentals, singer Caleb emotes with a dramatic grit that never loses its command. A model of melodic rock composition, arranged and produced with a warm, inviting veneer, and performed with aching sincerity, these 11 tracks coalesce into a sanguine whole that eclipses the band's much-discussed rock posturing and yields more with every play. A good band's great album, Only by the Night (finally) establishes Kings of Leon as a rock act that's worthy of seriously sustained attention. --Jason Kirk
Album Description Kings of Leon return with the release of their highly anticipated fourth album 'Only By The Night' on 22nd September through Columbia Records. 'Only By The Night' is a bold and expansive sonic statement that looks set to solidify Kings of Leon's position as one of the most important international acts of 2008 and beyond. It follows rapidly in the footsteps of the bands previous albums 'Youth And Young Manhood', 'Aha Shake Heartbreak' & 'Because Of The Times', which have quickly established them as one of the most prolific and acclaimed acts around.

Excellent September 23, 2008 Anthony P. Miller (Dallas, Texas) 44 out of 48 found this review helpful
Many bands that stick around for more than 1 or 2 albums seem (IMHO) to follow a trend with two identifiable characteristics: (1) change, and (2) increasing commercial appeal. I think the complaints that "these guys aren't the Kings of Leon they used to be" are tedious and based on a ridiculous expectation. It's going to happen (if the band is any good and not Pearl Jam), so get over it. I don't really care whether 10 or 1,000,000 other people want to listen to the album, or even whether a band was explicit in attempting to target a larger audience. The proper questions, it seems to me, are: Is is it good? Do I like listening to it? Is it going to stay in my car stereo for more than a few days? My answers to the first two are: Yes! and Yes! I can't answer the third yet, but if their last album is any indication... probably so.
YES! YES! YES! December 16, 2008 Shari Blake (Trinidad) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Okay so im not normally a fan of rock & roll but ive been feeling to listen to music thats a little more edgy than pop & r&b lately.. I began to explore the indie & alternative rock music scene, primarily UK artists such as Muse, Keane etc.. I was on amazon's UK site browsing for rock music when 'Only by the night' came up as one of their best selling albums and the reviewer mentioned that Kings of Leon is one of the UK's favorite American rock bands. I was intrigued and decided to check the album out. When I received the CD i was blown away! The lead singers voice is so raw & full of SOUL! And the guitar harmonies jesus! Are these guys siamese triplets? The guitar sounds just blow my mind, the syncronicity between the vocals & the background musical harmonies is truly amazing. Its nice to have an album where every piece that is played - be it drums, bass, lead guitar or vocals stands out as being brilliant while no one really shows up the other. I also love the southern flavor to the music. This album is well balanced and fresh and edgy and has a nice rawness to it. Im a fan tracks like Sex on fire, 17 and Manhattan but truly I love them all! Its the first album i've heard in a long time I want to listen to over and over again :D Overall 5 stars! :D
Open Your Mind.... September 24, 2008 CRH (OHIO) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is nothing like their amazing debut album but then again this seems to be a band that continues to re-invent itself with each release. Record #4 has the Kings a little more polished and mellow. But it works. Will everyone like it? No. Their loss.
Be Somebody, Please. September 24, 2008 Loron Hays 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Okay, I could have predicted all the poor reviews this album seems to be getting; KOL gets a stronger fan base and suddenly the critics and fans alike start aiming their weapons at their heroes. Forget'em. The people that don't get this album, well, don't get the band and should stay away from KOL. Please. This is a solid album, full of layered lyrics and awesome soundscapes. I mean, so what if they opened for U2 and might have learned some tricks from The Edge? That's a bad thing? Jeez. Grow a pair, people. And who cares that it doesn't sound like their first album? You know what? Their second album didn't sound like their first album, but people accepted it. Why? Because most people hadn't heard their first album. They went back to it after hearing the second album and then made the comparisons. And the third album didn't sound like the second album. But, you know what? It was better. Why? Because they get stronger with every release. They grow. They expand. You can't put a label on them and that's what displeases people. They aren't easy. It isn't brainless music. I mean, imagine if Bob Dylan recorded the same type of sounding album every single time? What if he never plugged in and recorded his ode to The Rolling Stones? What if no one took any chances at changing their sound? BORING. Change; that's what is it about. Embrace it. This is the best band out there. THEY WILL NEVER MAKE THE SAME ALBUM TWICE. Enjoy them while they are around. Buy this. Listen to it. Study it. It is already misunderstood...and that is a fact.
Great, Great, Great Record September 28, 2008 B. Montgomery (The Head) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great record. Now, I can see from looking at the reviews here that there are two camps here, one that is comparing this album to the other 3 Kings albums and 1 that is taking this album for what it is and comparing to what is out there now and realizing that they are maturing as a band. No this album isn't as wild, loud or crazy as the previous three. But just as No Code was the essential coming of age maturing record in Pearl Jam's career and one that was very highly debated upon its release, so is "Only By The Night" in Kings of Leon's career. This album is great, and its greatness is only multiplied when you judge this album not by previous KOL recordings but judge on what is coming out now a days. The music scene is pretty much terrible right now and Kings of Leon give us true music lovers a reason to visit the record store.
