Bonus Features, Price Make This an Enticing Offer March 14, 2010 Steve Vrana (Aurora, NE) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
It's been almost forty years since Jimi Hendrix's untimely death. As part of a reissue program, Experience Hendrix has reissued deluxe editions of his classic studio albums. For this longtime fan, ELECTRIC LADYLAND from 1968 is the ultimate Hendrix album. It's the album where he most fully untilized the studio to create his most enduring album.
There's not much to add to everything that's been written about this album, so I'll limit my comments to what's new with this 2010 edition:
The CD: The sticker on the shrink wrap says "Digitally Remastered," but I'm not sure there is a difference between this and my 1997 reissue. I'm not saying the sound isn't great; I'm just saying I don't notice a difference. [Note: my guess is they are simply playing fast and loose with the wording. After all, it IS digitally remastered; it's just not NEWLY remastered. Both releases were remastered by Eddie Kramer and George Marino.] This reissue contains all 16 original tracks--no bonus material. Running time - 75:27
The Booklet: Thirty-six pages. Lot's of great photos, including an alternate image (which Jimi hated!)from the UK cover photo session. An essay by Derek Taylor. Six pages of Jimi's original handwritten notes for the album. [Everything from the 1997 reissue is included in this booklet with additional photos and some minimal changes in the original layout.]
The DVD: There are no complete songs. A very limited amount of concert footage and nothing filmed during the actual sessions. Mostly on camera interview with original sound engineer Eddie Kramer playing snippets of tracks from the album. Also includes on camera interviews with Chas Chandler, Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding. At no time during the video does Jimi talk about the album. Overall, an interesting video, but won't bare repeated viewings. The inclusion of this short DVD is the major difference between this and the 1997 reissue. [The 2010 reissue also has a triple gatefold sleeve.] Running time - 12:15
If the bonus features aren't enough to sway you to pick up this new edition, the price makes it hard not to. However, if you already own the 1997 edition, ten bucks is a bit pricey for a 12-minute DVD.
How will they get us next time? March 26, 2010 A. Holliday (Adelaide Australia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic album (all the JHE albums are fantastic) and the remastering is excellent, although I am certain its the same remastering as the 1997 releases. If you've got those you're only buying these for the 20 minute DVDs (that you'll watch once).
But...I wonder what they'll do to get us to buy it next time? I'm betting original mono mix (it is different) as well as the stereo (and I think the unexpected demand for the Beatles mono releases will help here).
Then a couple of years after that we'll probably get a 5.1 version as well (I'd buy that - if ever there was an artist made for surround sound it was Jimi - as a few downloadable bootlegs - especially the EL one - make clear). After all you can get Pet Sounds in mono/stereo/reverse stereo (although that was probably a DVD-A mistake) and 5.1 - and they all sound great...
After 30+ years I'm losing count of how many times I've bought these albums!
Jimi Hedrix is a king August 10, 2010 Emerson Sartori (BrasÃlia, DF Brasil) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I had this cd. But I wanted to buy because the video. But for me isn't worth. If was the new pictures it's ok. The video shows the sound enginner talks about the same musics not all.
As to the cd is not necessary comment JImi Hendrix is a god of guitar.
The Best May 3, 2010 Sandra B. Norton This LP is probably the greatest recording ever made, that is if you are a Hendrix fan. It was way way ahead of it's time both in preformance and engineering quality.
And The Gods Made Love April 5, 2010 Shell-Zee (Long Island, NY) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
When reviewing record albums you often read, "I hear something different everytime I listen to it". Well there are no more than a handful of records that I can say actually evoke that sentiment within me. The ones that readily come to mind are "Astral Weeks" by Van Morrison, "Blonde On Blonde" by Bob Dylan and "Bitches Brew" by Miles Davis. But the one that really sets me on my ear with every listening is surely Jimi Hendrix's masterpiece "Electric Ladyland". From the opening slo-mo intro of "And The Gods Made Love" to the astounding psychedelic shock and awe of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)", Jimi and Company are hitting on all cylinders. Not only did Jimi Hendrix evolve into a first rate songwriter with works like "Voodoo Chile", "Gypsy Eyes", 1983 (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)" and "Rainy Day, Dream Away", but his unique interpretation of Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" rivals the original for sheer passion and verve. And the outstanding ensemble playing by "The Experience" with guest artists Steve Winwood, Buddy Miles and Chris Wood all combine to make this the true classic it has become over the years.
Yes, I not only never tire of the magnificence of "Electric Ladyland", but I wonder at its ability to constantly provide me with new insights and fresh ideas. It's been said that Jimi and Chas Chandler, the man most responsible for introducing the world to this extraordinary talent, were both huge science fiction buffs. Dig their extraterrestrial chatter on the leadup to "EXP" (the opening track of Axis Bold as Love). Perhaps that explains Jimi's unworldly gifts. Maybe it was the intergalactic gods that sent him to earth to save the world from the sorry state of affairs of pop music before Jimi rose to fame. Afterall how else can you explain the way top-forty music went from The Archies, "Sugar Sugar", The Monkees "Daydream Believer" and all that other 1910 Fruitgum Comany crap to "Are You Experienced" and "Electric Ladyland"?....."And The Gods Made Love" and so Jimi was born......And with that creation we would surely "Never Hear Surf Music Again"!
